How to Find Large Files on Mac

Locate gigabyte-sized files hiding deep inside nested Mac folders in seconds.

DiskShift Knowledge Base

Where Large Files Hide on macOS

Large files on Mac are rarely stored neatly on your Desktop. They often hide in ~/Library/Containers, Final Cut Pro event libraries, Logic Pro soundbanks, Xcode DerivedData, or old iPhone backup folders.

Finding Large Files with DiskShift

With DiskShift, finding large files requires no complex Terminal commands or manual Finder searches:

  1. Launch DiskShift and select your Mac drive.
  2. Look at the visual map: large blocks represent your biggest files.
  3. Click 'Find Files' and filter by size (>1GB, >500MB).
  4. Review file details and reveal them directly in Finder or move them to Trash.
